'I was just
doing my job'
I’m speechless for a second. “That’s so sweet, but really, you didn’t have to! I was just doing my job.” I almost forget that last week, we had to cover for a sick colleague, it was crazy busy, and we had a huge delivery to unpack. My manager smiles. “Hard to accept a compliment, isn’t it?” She winks and walks away.
The rest of the day, I can’t stop smiling. Such a small thing, yet it really sticks with me. It even gets me thinking—how can we pass this feeling on?
During lunch, I suggest putting a jar of heart-shaped lollipops at the checkout. A little treat for customers as they pay. My manager immediately jumps on it. “Great idea, I’ll take care of it! Oh, and have you seen that new learning module? There’s something fun in there too!”
I’ve never been big on Valentine’s Day, but I’ve noticed how more and more businesses are making it a thing. And so has our head office. They’ve created a special Valentine’s-themed learning module. Not just another training, but a fun quiz on customer experience. Which, honestly, ties in perfectly with my lollipop idea!
Then I spot a team challenge: who can come up with the best Valentine’s campaign? We can vote for the best ideas and get inspiration from colleagues in other locations. Learning suddenly feels way more fun and interactive. Tomorrow at lunch, we’re definitely brainstorming together!
While going through the learning module, I realise something simple but important: appreciation is contagious. I see how easy it actually is to give a compliment—to both colleagues and customers. And honestly? Receiving them feels just as good as giving them. A little kindness really does go a long way, right?
During my break, my manager excitedly walks up to us. “I’ve got a ‘date’ with another company soon! They want to share how they use Valentine’s Day to surprise both customers and employees.” She grins and heads back to work.
Curious, I scroll through my online learning environment. With a new tool, I ask the question: “How do I truly delight a customer?”
Within seconds, I get a detailed answer and a video of a colleague absolutely nailing a customer interaction. Love it!
At this point, I’m actually starting to like Valentine’s Day. Appreciation and learning go hand in hand. And not just on February 14th, but all year round.
